Bidding for and hosting the Olympics successfully is, perhaps, the ultimate glory for a city. However, before transforming the dream into reality, the benefits and drawbacks of bidding for the Olympics should be weighed carefully. Hosting the Olympics surely would bring about much gain to a city. Boom of the local economy, more jobs, and the possibility of generating income all sound extremely attractive to the municipal government. At the same time, better infrastructure, cleaner environment, enjoying the spectacular game with hundreds of sports elites and entertainment stars, and the opportunity of contacting people from all over the world also seem exciting to the citizens. Besides, the bidding will definitely promote the patriotic emotion and pride, as well as the moral behavior in local people. In most cases, bidding for the Olympics is well supported by both the public and the central government. Unfortunately, this is not the entire view of the pretty picture. If looking from another angle, the Olympic bid might bring about some side-effects to a city. First of all, the environmental impacts, including the increasing exhaust fumes of cars, more pressure on water resources, huge amount of wasted leaflets and other materials used for public activities, are most probably neglected. In order to broaden the streets, some trees may have to be cut. Near the construction site, the tiny dust may linger in the air for a long time. Reduction of farmland may be caused by the need of setting up new sports centre or accommodation facilities. These environmental consequences can be especially serious in a resource-limited and densely-populated city in a third-world country. Besides, if talking about the economic benefit, it should notbe forgotten that a quick boosting may lead to bubble growth, which may easily crash. If not well managed and organized, the big event may not be so profitable, and the new facilities may be forever empty after the games. Yes, there have been cases that host cities ended up with enormous debts. Finally, let’s think about the low-income groups in the city. What will they get from the Olympics bidding? More tax, more fees, more expensive property prices, and higher cost of living. These definitely are not good news for them. To bid or not to, this is a question. It is up to the choice of the municipal government, and the local public. After the decision, what they can do is to make the most of the benefit, and reduce the drawbacks to the least.

Susan: Hi, Peter! Good morning!
Peter: Oh, Susan! Good morning!
Susan: What a surprise! I fail to see you for a whole month!
Peter: Well, recently I have been preparing for the GRE test. I absorb myself in studying it in the library almost every day.
Susan: GRE? What is that?
Peter: You dont know that? In fact, its quite prevalent in the college campus recently. It stands for the Graduate Record Examinations.
Susan: Graduate Record Examinations...Well, that sounds rather distant from me, after all I am still a second-year student. And by the way, is this test difficult?
Peter: Absolutely. This is a test aiming at the non-American students who want to enter United States colleges to further their study.
Susan: Wow, thats awesome!
Peter: Yeah...But the test is awesome as well. An examinee is required of almost the same level of the English ability as that of his American counterpart.
Susan: Thats formidable indeed. However, I believe that you can make it anyway. You are always the best student in our school.
Peter: Thank you for your encouragement. But I still dont have much confidence in myself. Among all the contents Ive been studying for the GRE, the vocabulary turns out to be the most troublesome one.
Susan: So you must have a very huge vocabulary to pass the examine.
Peter: You are right, and I need to remember nearly 20 thousand words. Actually, not only is the vocabulary rather huge, but aslo do the majority of the words it contains turn out to be complicated and strange. You almost can never apply them in your daily life.
Susan: Oh, thats really horrible! However, I think Ive got a good news for you: just now in the library I had seen a book about how to remember the English words as efficiently as possible.Thats really a perfect book, and Im sure that it will help you.
Peter: Really? But how can I find it?
Susan: Simply go to the second floor and search for the name "Magic Skills in Remembering English Words" with the help of the computer. It will then tell you the exact location of this book.
Peter: Susan, Im so grateful for your advice. You almost solve my biggest problem. I just cannot help feeling like to rush to the library to get this book!
Susan: Then just go there right now in case that it might be borrowed by others.
Peter: OK, then see you later... At last, thank you again for your help!
Susan: See you later. Hope that you will achieve excellent result in the test!
