阅读理解Where Did Music Come From Look anywhere and you’ll find music. Without a single exception, every culture produces some form of it. Yet music’s origin remains one of the great secrets of human history. The oldest known instruments are 42,000-year-old bone flutes discovered in caves in Germany. Music surely appeared earlier, but the problem is that music doesn’t fossilize and our brains don’t fossilize. With little hard evidence, scientists still discuss what evolutionary purpose music serves or whether it serves any purpose at all.For many years, music researchers have more or less settled into two camps: those who believe the evolution of music is a biological adaptation, and those who believe it’s a cultural invention. In the latter argument, the music we love dearly is no more than “auditory cheesecake”, as evolutionary scientist Steven Pinker said. Rather than a biological adaptation in its own right, music is a pleasing byproduct of other adaptations, like language. “As far as biological cause and effect are concerned, music is useless,” Pinker said. “Music could disappear from our mankind and the rest of our lifestyle would be absolutely unchanged.”Some found this conclusion too dismissive. After all, the capacity to make and enjoy music seems rooted in each of us, just like other valuable adaptations. “These days music is a profession, but even ordinary people who never had a music lesson have implicit knowledge of the structure of the music of their culture,” says Sandra Trehub, a scientist at the University of Toronto. What’s more, Trehub studies music sense in babies. They are strongly attracted to music, and they can even remember music months after hearing it. “You see these amazing abilities,” she says, “and you have to think that there is a biological foundation for it.”That doesn’t necessarily mean we evolved that foundation for music, but many scientists have offered explanations for why we might have. Some argue music is a system for social relationships, helping us to exist together in united, well-functioning groups. Another possibility is that music originates from the relaxing sounds parents make to communicate with babies. Some researchers even argue that the earliest form of music may have given rise to language itself. Others think that music and language share a common ancestor. Some have sought a way around the adaptation-invention difference. A musicologist Savage and his group tell the difference between music (a cultural product) and musicality (a biological foundation that allows us to create and appreciate music). This alone doesn’t explain the final origin of music, but it does allow room for both nature and nurture. They suggest that cultural music and biological musicality have developed together, in a kind of “gene-culture evolution”.1.People who see music as a cultural product believe that ________.A.lifestyles of people change greatly without musicB.music is just a little more attractive than a tasty cheesecakeC.music is an unexpected result of certain biological adaptationsD.music serves the purpose of evolving in response to their surroundings2.According to the passage, Sandra Trehub believes that ________.A.babies are able to memorise music after hearing it for monthsB.babies are better at recognising musical differences than adultsC.people without musical training know about the musical structure in their cultureD.music comes from the sounds made by parents when they communicate with babies3.What does the underlined word “dismissive” in Paragraph 4 probably mean A.Worthless. On my way to school I wondered, what questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers: “I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven’t lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It’s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it was the rule for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me.My teacher was called Mr. Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn’t stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr. Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens, so he asked several boys if they knew Dickens’ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: “Timbuktu” and Mr. Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: ”Portsmouth” and everyone stared at me because Mr. Jones said I was right. This didn’t make me very popular, of course. “He thinks he’s clever,” I heard Brian say. After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian’s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.“He’s big enough and useless enough,” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down quickly and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.“Do you want to join my team ” he said.At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.9.The writer prepared to answer all of the following questions EXCEPT “________”.A.How old are you B.Where are you from C.Do you want to join my team D.When did you come back to London 10.We can learn from the passage that ________.A.boys were usually unfriendly to new students B.the writer was not greeted as he expectedC.Brian praised the writer for his cleverness D.the writer was glad to be a goalkeeper11.The underlined part “I didn’t stand out” in paragraph 3 means that the writer was not ___.A.noticeable B.nervous C.important D.surprised12.The writer was offered a handkerchief because ________.A.he was in Brian’s team B.he was no longer a new comerC.he was beginning to be accepted D.he pushed a player on the other teamValencia is in the east part of Spain. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants.Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚芽). Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores are all on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.17.The main idea of the first paragraph is that ______.A.plants are important for life B.plants cannot grow without airC.there are many plants in the world D.we can not live without water18.Plants can make food from______.A.flower, water and air B.water, sunlight and airC.air, water and soil D.air, sun and light19.What can we infer (推断) from the passage A.Of all living things animals are most importantB.Spores are seedsC.All fruits of flowering plants have seedsD.Without plants, man will die out20.This passage may be taken from______.A.a medicine book B.a novelC.a science magazine D.an experiment report21.The underlined word “protected” in the third paragraph can be replaced by ______.A.damaged B.polluted C.prevented D.guarded“How can I learn English well ” This is a question many students ask. In my opinion the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell what the lesson says in your own words you're a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect. This is a difficult task. However if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson you’ll find it not half as hard as you might have thought. Learning this way you will make rapid progress. Of course writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you your own language gets in your way. So never try to see English through translation.22.In the writer’s opinion the most effective way in learning English is ____.A.to practise speaking writing and feeling it B.to forget your own native languageC.to learn lessons by heart. D.to memorize the English words and grammatical rules23.“Instead of helping you your own language gets in your way.” This sentence means that memorizing your own language can ________.A.help you to study English well B.stop you mastering EnglishC.make English easy to D.help you notice mistakes24.Equally important is to feel the language, “to feel the language” here means________.A.to get a knowledge of English by touching. In the latter argument, the music we love dearly is no more than “auditory cheesecake”, as evolutionary scientist Steven Pinker said. This alone doesn’t explain the final origin of music, but it does allow room for both nature and nurture. They suggest that cultural music and biological musicality have developed together, in a kind of “gene-culture evolution”.(音乐学家萨维奇和他的团队区分了音乐(一种文化产品)和音乐性(一种让我们创造和欣赏音乐的生物学基础)之间的区别。 根据第二段“There are so many sights to see here. It is a pity to drive in a car and you’ll miss a great part of it.”可知,澳大利亚黄金海岸有许多景点,开车去的话,会错过许多的美景。因此你最好不要开车去,因为你不能很好的欣赏美丽的风景。故选C。6.细节理解题。根据第三段“...being able to stop whenever you want to see an interesting animal or bird...be able to take a picture”(无论你什么时候想看一个有趣的动物或一只鸟你都可以停下来,你可以拍照)可知,A、C正确;根据最后一段的“a cheap way to travel”可知,B正确;根据第三段的“It is a totally different experience from either simply sunbathing or passing it in a car.”(骑自行车游览和单纯的日光浴及开车是完全不一样的经历)可知,D项骑自行车是做日光浴的好方法,是错误的,故选D。7.主旨大意题。根据第四段“There are many choices of hiring a bicycle...These bikes for both adults and children are in many styles and colors...try a tandem bike”(租赁自行车有很多选择,成年人和孩子们的自行车有很多样式和颜色),因此推断本段主要介绍的是商店里自行车的种类,故选B。8.推理判断题。根据最后一段“everyone should try at least once...a wonderful chance...(每个人都应当尝试一次……一个极好的机会)”可推断,对于自行车租赁,作者是极力推荐的,故选A。9.C10.B11.A12.C【解析】【导语】
