Pete Dietert Good analysis on the Ng-LeCun "Why the 6-month AI Pause is a Bad Idea" chat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY9KV8uCtj4As much as I respect Andrew Ng and Yann LeCun I too was disappointed by their echo chamber discussion. These two are some of the smartest in AI, and I expected more intellectual firepower from them. Ethics. Risk. Privacy:Moral pillars with huge implications in an open democracy. We can't sweep these under a threadbare rug called Harms. LeCun tries to allay fears of "AI doomness" . He makes the argument that "Thinking that somehow we are smart enough to build super-intelligent systems but not smart enough to make them behave properly is a very, very strong assumption because it's very low probability" How so? Ng continues to reference the "harms" but refuses to explore them. He continues to shift the conversation towards how great the technology is. Both Ng and LeCun are great, well-meaning scientists but they're human and too attached to their baby.Next up, neuroimaging. Tech that aims to read your mind and probe your memories is already here.
