NAIA football playoff résumés of Western, Tech, SOU, Carroll

HELENA — The 2024 NAIA Football Selection Show is Sunday, following the regular-season’s final weekend. The Frontier Conference has never sent four teams to the NAIA Football Championship Series, but sporting a ranked quartet entering Saturday, that’s a real possibility.

No. 23 Carroll College would need to beat No. 8 Montana Tech to increase those odds, but it’s much more likely the Frontier sends three teams to the expanded 20-team playoff for a second consecutive season.

The selection (for at-large teams) and seeding processes (for automatic berths) are complicated and many different factors are considered. At-large teams must be ranked in the top-25 of the final regular-season NAIA coaches’ poll (Nov. 17).

Teams ranked one-through-six in the final regular-season NAIA coaches poll will be seeded in the order of rating finish (potentially applies to Montana Western).

Below, the selection criteria is broken down, and each of the top-4 Frontier football teams’ playoff résumés are presented. This information is entering Saturday and does not take into account the updated Area Ranking Committee report expected on Thursday.

The selection show is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT on Sunday.

Takeaways: Montana Western (assuming advancement) should be in a position to host multiple playoff games.

Montana Tech has a stronger résumé than Southern Oregon, helped by the Orediggers’ scheduling – and defeating – of nationally-ranked Georgetown (Ky.). Tech certainly earns a first-round bye (top-12 seed) by beating Carroll Saturday. Could the Orediggers sneak into a second-round home game?

Carroll College misses the playoffs with a loss Saturday. Question is, does a victory over Tech vault the Saints past SOU (assuming max three Frontier teams make FCS) or give the selection committee enough reason to send four Frontier programs to the playoffs (never happened before).
