School of Chinese Language and Literature (SCLL)

The School of Chinese Language and Literature of Beijing Foreign Studies University (hereinafter referred to as “SCLL”) includes three teaching departments: Department of Chinese, Department of Chinese as a Foreign Language, and Chinese Training Center. Department of Chinese is responsible for the training of Chinese undergraduates as well as Chinese and international postgraduate students. Department of Chinese as a Foreign Language is responsible for the training of international undergraduate students, and the Chinese Training Center is responsible for Chinese training for international students. SCLL boasts a team of highly qualified and professional teachers, with more than 70 full-time teachers and nearly 60 part-time teachers. Among them, teachers with senior titles account for 50%, and all teachers have learning or teaching experience overseas. Currently, more than 1,100 Chinese and international students are studying in BFSU, including over 500 Chinese students and over 600 international students.

SCLL has master’s and PhD programs, including 7 master’s programs (Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, International Chinese Language Education, Chinese linguistics, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Ancient Chinese Literature, Literature and Art, and Chinese Contemporary Literature) and 3 PhD programs (Comparative Literature and Cross-cultural Studies, International Chinese Language Education, Language Policy and Planning). All majors are now open to global admissions.

The international student education of SCLL boasts the following characteristics:

1. Internationalized learning environment: international students of SCLL come from nearly 50 countries, with its Chinese students from all over the country. Chinese and international students are studying in the same School, thus forming a valuable international learning environment, and building a cross-cultural communication platform.

2. Effective rewarding system: SCLL provides national scholarships, Confucius Institute Scholarship and other awards for students with excellent academic performance, and it has also set up “Outstanding Student Award”, “Outstanding Class Monitor Award”, and “Outstanding Graduation Thesis Award”, etc. Besides, SCLL also provides a grade-skipping system for outstanding students both in morality and academic performance.

3. Diversified and colorful activities: regular activities like “Chinese Corner” and “Film Day” are arranged every week, and SCLL organizes senior students to carry out various language practices and field research each semester. Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to go to other cities for pre-graduation internships and visit typical cities and enterprises in China.

4. Strong academic atmosphere: SCLL sponsors two academic journals, namely International Chinese Language Education and Journal of Humanities. It regularly invites well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad to host academic lectures and exchange activities, and occasionally holds academic conferences both at home and abroad.

一、 Undergraduate Programs for International Students

Undergraduate education in SCLL for international students targets at training international talents with high proficiency in Chinese and familiarity with Chinese society and culture. SCLL enrolls four-year undergraduate international students every spring and autumn. There are currently more than 400 undergraduate students in SCLL. Originated in 1992, undergraduate education in SCLL for international students has functioned through a mature teaching model and curriculum system, as well as high-quality courses and efficient teaching management. SCLL has established two majors: Chinese language and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. Based on the Chinese language major, SCLL has established five major directions: Chinese Language, Literature and Culture, Economics and Trade, Translation from and into Chinese and Chinese Language Teaching.

SCLL has carried out academic exchanges and cooperation with universities in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Italy and other countries. Many organizations are sending students to SCLL for pursuing undergraduate studies annually, including Japan NPO International Exchange Education Support Association, Malaysian Government, Malaysia Mara Group, etc. Besides, SCLL also undertakes the “3 + 1” project of Kansai University of Japan, the “3 + 1”and “2 + 2” projects of Pusan University of Foreign Studies in South Korea, and the “2 + 1” project of Sapienza University of Rome, Italy.

Up till now, over 3,000 international undergraduate students have graduated from SCLL, who are now playing an active role all over the world in various fields such as education, culture, trade, diplomacy, etc., contributing to the cooperation and communication between China and other countries.

2.   HSK Level 4 over 180.

3.The   major of Translation from & into Chinese requires 180 points or above for   HSK5 level and the mother tongue of the students should be the source   language of the translation major (for example, “Chinese-Italian translation”   requires the mother tongue of the students to be “Italian”.)

4. Pass the SCLL entrance examination

三、Chinese Training Programs for International Students

General Training Programs

The period of study for general education programs usually lasts for one to two semesters (approximately 18 weeks). The trainees are classified into 8 levels (from A to H) according to their Chinese proficiency levels. Courses are taught in small classes, with about 15 students each class. The teaching features intensive practice and lecturing and aims to improve students’ language proficiency in a short time. In addition to compulsory courses, the school also provides more than 10 elective courses, interest courses, and a variety of language practice courses each semester. Winter and summer short terms are mainly provided for short-term study-abroad programs or summer camp projects in universities in various countries. Our partner universities include University of Pennsylvania, Lancaster University, People’s Friendship University of Russia, Daito Bunka University of Japan, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and Seoul National University of Korea.

The period of study, teaching content and management methods of special training programs are tailored according to the requirements of the students, with distinctive features and significant effects. SCLL has rich experiences in undertaking diversified programs, mainly including the Training Program of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, USA, Business Chinese Training Program of the Deutscher Akademische Austausch Dient (DAAD), Chinese Language Training of EU Science and Technology Fellowship Program, China-EU Junior Managers Training program, China-EU Legal Chinese Training Program, Chinese-Japanese Simultaneous Interpreting Training Program, Chinese Training Program for Law Enforcement Liaison Officers, Chinese Training Program of the Sapienza University of Rome, etc.
