Introduction

In the contemporary age, there is a constant debate over preserving history versus making progress. In terms of the old buildings, many people assert that the restoration of them is so capital-intensive that they should make way for modern new buildings. I find myself in staunch disagreement with such a viewpoint.

解析

这次的task2是一道典型的旧题,非常中规中矩,讨论老建筑是否该被拆除;新旧的替换也是雅思考试中的一个常见考点,我们可以从老建筑的历史文化价值角度出发,同时结合题目中提议的“必要性”进行展开讨论;

capital-intensive adj. 资本密集的

staunch adj.坚定的

Body 1

Preserving old buildings, as is argued by a group of people, is a total waste of money , posing heavy financial burden for the government. As the organizer and coordinator of the whole society, the government should give top priority to people’s livelihood including perfecting social welfare system, enhancing infrastructure as well as addressing current thorny social issues. Meanwhile, some people may voice their concern toward the safety and inconvenience of old buildings , where city dwellers have to make a long detour for poor routes and are likely to suffer from buildings toppling for these housing areas have been worn down by the years without restoration . Establishing new housing, in contrast, meets the need of growing urban population for accommodation as well as improves people’s overall living standard.

解析

一部分人认为保存老建筑是完全浪费钱的,会对政府产生经济负担;政府应该优先考虑人们的民生问题如完善社会福利,提升基础设施建设,解决棘手社会问题;同时,老建筑的安全性和不便利性也值得担忧;在老破小生活的人们可能因为没有好的道路而需要绕行,也可能因为房屋的年久失修而承担一定的房屋倒塌风险;

give top priority to v.优先考虑

perfect v.完善

make a long detour v. 绕路

topple v.倒塌;因不稳而倒下

wear down v. 磨损;损耗

Body 2

Nonetheless, knocking down old buildings, from my perspective, takes its toll on carrying forward traditional culture. It is generally acknowledged that historical buildings form a cultural identity and keep a unique record of a country, playing midwife to researching into the past and educating future generations. With these ancient structures, youngsters are able to have profound appreciation about their cultural heritage and develop a strong sense of national pride. Moreover, old buildings, if utilized and preserved properly, could actually boost economic development. Persuasive examples for this argument would be Big Ben in London and the pyramids of Egypt. As landmarks of the city and nation, they attract a sea of sightseers every year, generating oceans of revenue for the government, which far overwhelms their upkeep cost.

解析

在我个人看来,这些老建筑不应该被拆除首先是因为它们代表着当地的历史与文化,能够帮助人们探索过去,同时对于后代有着深远的教育意义; 从这些古建筑会产生的经济价值角度出发,也可以很合理地解释我们保护这些建筑的理由;

take its toll on v.对...造成恶果或不利影响

carry forward v. 发扬;弘扬

play midwife to v. 有助于

profound appreciation 深刻理解

develop a strong sense of national pride 产生名族自豪感

Big Ben in London 伦敦大本钟

pyramids of Egypt 埃及金字塔

a sea of 大量的

oceans of 大量的

overwhelm v. 超过

upkeep cost n. 维修费用

Conclusion

To recapitulate, I believe that the protection of old buildings, instead of standing in the way of progress, plays an indispensable role in reflecting history and creating values in modern life.Nevertheless, we are not advocating turning a blind eye to the establishment of new buildings.

解析

stand in the way 阻碍

play an indispensable role 起重要作用

turn a blind eye to 忽略
