Grain Rain originates from the old, "Rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains". As recorded in A Collective Interpretation of the Seventy-two Phenological terms: "The soil has fortified with nutrients and started to become loosen since Grain Rain, and now it is raining again to support the growth of grain. It is the very period that sow the grain by scattering them on the field." Also, it links grain and rain with the meaning of "Rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains", has great significance of agricultural climate. Spring is about to end and summer is coming. As the last solar term in spring, this period sees the temperature rise and rainfall increase.

谷雨，源自古人“雨生百谷”之说。《月令七十二候集解》中记载：“三月中，自雨水后，土膏脉动，今又雨其谷于水也……盖谷以此时播种，自上而下也。”谷雨将“谷”和“雨”联系起来，蕴涵着“雨生百谷”之意，反映了谷雨的农业气候意义。

We divided the fifteen days in Grain Rain solar term into three periods: On the first five days, duckweed starts to grow; after five days, cuckoos flutter their wings; another five days later, hoopoes can be spotted on mulberry trees. "As willow-down's all gone and cuckoos out with disturbing cries", Willow catkins is falling down, the cuckoo moaning at night, Peony blooming with pistil out，cherry becoming red and ripe…… The natural phenomena tells people that spring is coming to an end.

我国古人将谷雨时节的十五天分为三候：一候萍始生；二候鸣鸠拂其羽；三候戴胜降于桑。“杨花落尽子规啼”，柳絮飞落，杜鹃夜啼，牡丹吐蕊，樱桃红熟……自然景物告示人们，时至暮春了。

The representative flowers of Grain Rain are: peony for the first period, blackberry rose for the second period and neem flower for the third flower. Peony flower, also known as Grain Rain flower, is a flower named after the solar term.

谷雨花信为：一候牡丹、二候荼蘼、三候楝花。牡丹花也叫谷雨花，它是一种以节气命名的花。

喝雨前茶

“春山谷雨前，并手摘芳烟。”谷雨前采摘的茶味道醇厚，香气浓烈。约三五知己或一人独处于静室，沏一壶清茶，细品春日融融，这便是中国人独享的意趣。

There is an old custom in southern China that people drink tea on the day of Grain Rain. Spring tea during Grain Rain is rich in vitamins and amino acids, which can help to remove heat from the body and is good for the eyes. It is also said that drinking tea on this day would prevent bad luck.

中国南方有个习俗：人们要在谷雨当天饮茶。谷雨期间的春茶富含维他命和氨基酸，对身体散热和明目都有帮助。还有一种说法：谷雨喝茶可抵挡厄运。

吃香椿

吃香椿又叫“吃春”，谷雨时期的香椿鲜嫩清爽，营养丰富，凉拌、炒蛋或炸成“椒盐香椿鱼”都十分美味。

People in northern China have the tradition to eat the vegetable toona sinensis during Grain Rain. An old Chinese saying goes "toona sinensis before the rain is as tender as silk". The vegetable is nutritious and can help to strengthen the immune system. It is also good for the stomach and skin.

中国北方人有谷雨吃香椿的传统。俗话说：“雨前椿芽嫩如丝”，这种蔬菜营养丰富，有助于增强免疫系统，还有利于健胃护肤。

祭海

部分沿海地区的渔民会在谷雨举办祭海活动，渔民们向海神献上祭品，以求出海平安和收获满满。

Grain Rain marks the start of the fishermen’s first voyage of the year. The custom dates back more than 2,000 years ago, when people believed they owed a good harvest to the gods, who protected them from the stormy seas. People would worship the sea and stage sacrifice rites on the Grain Rain festival, praying for a bountiful harvest and a safe voyage for their loved ones.

谷雨标志着渔民们在这一年里的首次出海。该习俗可追溯到两千多年前，当时人们认为是神灵保佑他们免受风暴袭击，获得丰收。在谷雨庆典仪式上，人们会祭海并举行相关仪式，祈求丰收，也祈求所爱之人出海平安。

走谷雨

古时有“走谷雨”的风俗，谷雨这天青年妇女走村串亲，有的到野外走一圈就回来。寓意与自然相融合，强身健体。

Legend has it that Cang Jie, a government historian in the period of the Yellow Emperor, created Chinese characters after observing the footprints of birds and animals. 据传黄帝正是在春末夏初发布诏令，宣布仓颉造字成功，当时上天还下了一场真正的“谷雨”。因此仓颉死后，人们会在每年的谷雨时节祭拜他。
