Fortunately, the tiger was not inside the cave at the time.
The deer was trying to lead her young ones out of the cave when she heard a loud roar. She saw the tiger at a distance coming towards the cave. It was dangerous to go out of the cave now. She thought of a plan. The deer raised her voice and shouted, "My deer young children do not weep. I shall capture (捕捉)a tiger for you to eat. You can have a good dinner."
The tiger heard these words and became frightened. He thought, "Whose is that strange voice from the cave? A dangerous animal is staying inside to capture me. I shall run away to escape death." The tiger began to run away from there as fast as possible.
A jackal (胡狼)saw the running tiger. "Why are you running in great fear?" the jackal asked. The tiger said, "My friend, a powerful and fierce animal is in my cave. The young ones are crying for a tiger to eat. The mother is promising to capture a tiger for them. So, I am running away."
The cunning jackal was now sure the tiger was a coward (懦夫). It said, "Don’t be afraid. No animal is fiercer or stronger than a tiger Let us go together to find out."
But the tiger said, "I do not want to take a chance. You may run away. I will be left alone to die. So, I will not come with you."
The jackal said, "Trust me. Let us knot (打结)our tails together. Then I will not be able to leave you." The tiger agreed unwillingly to this proposal. So the jackal tied their tails in a knot. Now they walked towards the cave together.

After arguments with his wife, Rip always went off hunting with his dog, Wolf. One day, after another argument, Rip went further than usual in the woods and came to a beautiful valley. Suddenly, he heard a strange voice calling his name. An old man, dressed in old-fashioned clothes, was trying to carry a barrel(木桶) and asked Rip to help him. Rip agreed. They took the barrel to a cave, where there were more people, all dressed in the same strange clothes. After that, the old man gave Rip a drink from the barrel. Rip immediately fell into a deep sleep.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you have got a problem,” Arthur said.
“I am afraid so. I am in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you are sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these two suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all, I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery.
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised, “Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I am the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

Exercise 5
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything. It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the best miracle I have ever seen in my life.I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn’t walking with his usual steps. He was obviously walking with great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey. He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill(溅出) the water he held in them. I stepped close as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much greater purpose, I thought. As I came closer, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them, at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck (雄鹿) was dangerously close. But the buck neither threatened him nor even moved as Billy knelt down. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lifting its head with great effort to lap (舔) up the water cupped in my boy’s hands.注意:

参考答案
Exercise 1
The deer saw the jackal and the tiger coming together. She again raised her voice. She shouted towards her children standing inside the cave, "My dear children, I requested my friend, the clever jackal, to capture a tiger for us. Now look the jackal has captured a tiger for us. He has tied the tiger’s tail to his tail. This is to prevent the tiger from escaping. You will soon have the tiger for dinner."
The tiger was shocked to hear this and he was sure now the jackal cheated him. So, the tiger decided to escape from the terrible animal standing inside his cave. He started running. He forgot about the jackal. He dragged the jackal over rocks and thorns. In the mad escape the jackal was caught between two rocks. The tiger pulled with all his might. His tail got cut. The jackal was killed in this incident. The tail-less tiger ran away to another part of the forest. The deer and her young ones left the tiger’s cave. They joined their herd safely. Presence of mind and intelligence can save one from dangerous situations.
Exercise 2
Mel froze as there wasn’t any mixup. She realized she was the one who’d made a mistake. Her little sister had earned the first chair through efforts—and she hadn’t even congratulated her. Mel walked down the hall. Most days, she spent her time thinking about softball, her classes and her friends. Every day was so full that she didn’t always practice her violin while Abbie played every day. Determined to make a change, Mel decided to have a talk with Abbie.
After school, Mel found Abbie on a bench outside, playing the violin. Mel made up her mind to apologize to Abbie after a brief inner struggle. She cleared her throat and started, “I’m so proud that you’re concertmaster. I’m sorry I’ve been so mean. I guess I was jealous.” Abbie was surprised.“But you’re popular, Mel. You get better grades. You’re better at sports. You can do everything.” Mel shook her head.“I can’t make a trill like you can.” “You can if you keep practicing.” Abbie smiled and asked if Mel would like to play with her. Mel agreed delightedly.

Exercise 4
Paragraph 1
As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop, stop!” So frightened was Arthur that he ran faster with that suitcase. When he rushed to the Park Avenue, he stopped a taxi and jumped into it. Nervously, he told the driver to speed up and dropped him off at the police station. With the driver driving fast, leaving the young man’s shouts and the loud noise of the alarm far behind, Arthur felt a little at ease. (68)
Paragraph 2
The taxi stopped in front of the Police Station and Arthur jumped off with the suitcase, running to the police office. He handed it to a policeman and reported what had happened. Arthur insisted that the suitcase be opened to make sure the money in it was not lost. Much to Arthur’s surprise, there was no money except some clothes and many books. Immediately, Arthur realized that he mistook the young man for the bank thief. As a result, he had to return the suitcase to the young man and apologize to him. What a funny thing it was for Arthur! Exercise 5
When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to the tap. Billy turned it on and began to cup both hands. He knelt down, letting the drip slowly fill up his “cup”. And now I knew what was going on. Obviously, was afraid of being scolded for wasting water, so he avoided asking me for help. When he stood up and turned back, I walked toward him. His eyes were filled with tears. “Mom, I’m not wasting.”
This time I joined him, with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him tend to the baby deer alone while I just helped fetch the water. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, himself, was weeping with pride. I can’t believe it was raining!
