其中，644英汉新闻编译科目，既关注学生的新闻基础知识，又考察学生的英语新闻写作能力。初试的题型基本上分三个部分：
四道简答题，每题10分，合计40分；
一篇新闻段落排序，合计10分；
一篇新闻完整编译，合计100分。
【简答题】
简答题一题10分，不能回答得过于简单，也不能一味凑字数，而是要切中要点且逻辑完整。推荐使用总分总的答题步骤，遵循定义——框架——总结这样的三层设置。
这个题型是基本围绕英语新闻的基础知识，如软新闻和硬新闻的定义，什么是倒金字塔体、该文体有何优势，新闻写作中引语的作用、什么是新闻价值等。整体考察的内容较为基础，且需要学生进行英文作答。
一、真题题目（以2023年的真题为例）：
What is the function of lead?

①A lead is to a news story what a prelude is to a symphony, which can set the tone
for the whole article. Reporters catch or lose the reader with the first paragraph, the
first sentence, even the first line of the copy. In sum, the lead plays the most important
role in a news story. To be specific, the function of lead is summarized as following four aspects.
②First, it either grabs readers' attentions or makes them lose interests in the story. An effective story lead should meet two requirements. It captures the essence of the event, and it cajoles the reader into staying awhile.
③Second, it affects the editor's decision that whether a piece of news is killed or not. Meanwhile, it can determine the place where the news article might be located in the newspaper.
④Third, it sets the keynote for the whole story and it is often critical to the unfolding of the news body. "The story flows from the lead," is an old newsroom saying. Once crafted, the lead helps to organize the story.
⑤Fourth, it is the writers' showcase where he displays his best work. It can take so much effort for every journalist who has ever struggled with a lead. Writing a lead concentrates the mind wonderfully, forcing journalists to decide what in the story is important, what to emphasize, and can eventually shape to the rest of the story.
三、答案解析：
本道题提问的内容是“导语的作用”，因此需要快速在脑海中回忆出关于导语这一基础知识的相关要点；同时要注意在回答作用之前，还需要先解释一下导语的定义，然后才能顺理成章地进行下一步的功能解释。
在解释完导语的定义后，要设置一个过渡句，再分点给出导语的作用与功能，同时可以给出一些简洁明了的事例说明。
四、备考建议：
历年简答题的题目基本都是在考察英语新闻一些基础性的术语表达，主要考察的是考生对于英语新闻的基本理解：一方面是术语本身是否知晓其含义；另一方面是能否用英文进行准确的表述。且题目多出自于《报刊英语研究》。
因此在备考的过程中，考生应仔细研读《报研》的核心知识点，梳理可能的考点，整理相关的英文表达，最终熟练背诵默写。
同时要注意，每年试题的提问方法可能略有差异：有的时候会直接问是什么，有的时候会请你下定义，有的时候会提问它的新闻功能。但万变不离其宗，这些都可以看作是针对提问中的核心考点名词进行解释。
【新闻段落排序题】
新闻段落排序题是将一篇完整的新闻报道拆成5个段落，将顺序打乱，需要考生重新找回正常顺序。
在处理排序题的时候，需要考生清晰理解硬新闻倒金字塔体的写作结构，其中尤为重要的是导语的判断，否则会出现“一步错全盘输”的可能。
一、真题题目（以2021年的真题为例）：
Re-arrange the following paragraphs in the correct order to create a coherent news story.
[A] Under the terms of the agreement, all parties involved will form a joint venture company and contribute funding to the construction and development of Legoland Shanghai. The total project investment is expected to be approximately $550 million. Construction of the project is scheduled to start next year.

三、答题解析：
排序题最重要的是确定第一段，即导语。因此要抓住5W1H和信息源，直接判断。拿到题目后，快速读取文章主题：上海的乐高乐园，然后锁定[B]为导语；接着按照下一段持续补充上一段未尽信息的倒金字塔体结构，判断全文顺序。
四、备考建议:
备考的时候，第一步是先清晰理解基本概念。此外历年的新闻段落排序题都是真实的新闻报道，也就是说考生可以在平常多去阅读China Daily, Shanghai Daily和Xinhua News上的硬新闻文章，以5～6个自然段的全文为佳，在阅读的同时去分析判断倒金字塔体是如何搭建的，以及导语的常见写法。
