PartⅡ Reading Comprehension(40%)
Passage1
If youare going to be a straight talker, you have to believe that it’s a virtue.
If youhave an opinion and you just state it, it allows the other person to either tryto change your opinion, or to agree with you. If you are quiet, people think youagree. How can you then further the conversation when you have differentopinions and they are not really exposed? Agreeing is easy. Disagreeing takesmore guts.
Severalyears back, when I was CEO at a company, there was a very senior woman who was verysmart and well spoken, but she did not wear appropriate clothes. It wasdistracting and she was not being taken seriously. I said to her manager, whowas male, “You need to tell her.” He said, “Oh, no way.”
So Icalled her in and directly stated what I thought was happening. I told her,“You’re not getting the respect you deserve.” I said, “Go to the store and geta personal shopper. Just say, ‘I’m a senior businessperson and need helpdressing appropriately’”. She came back, and she was completely a differentperson. She said she felt really good. And her promotion went way up.
Early inmy business career, if people asked me a question, I’d try to answer ithonestly. And that was rewarded. I had managers who wanted me around because Iwould actually tell them what was happening.
I wasraised by my grandma, and she was a pretty straight talker because she thoughtyou could handle it. My advice is to be realistic. Being honest and truthful ispart of being a good person.

Passage 2
A punctual person is in the habit of doinga thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment.
The unpunctual man, on the contrary, neverdoes what he has to do at the proper time. He is always in a hurry and in theend loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again, butlost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things. Infact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is forever wasting andmismanaging his most valuable asset(财产) as well as others’. The unpunctual person isalways complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or return calls orkeep appointments promptly. But the man who really has a great deal to do isvery careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it. He knows that hecannot get through huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every pieceof work when it has to be attended to.
Failure to be punctual in keeping one’sappointments is a sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited todinner and arrives later than the appointed time, he keeps all the other guestswaiting for him. Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to thehost and all other guests present.
Unpunctuality, moreover, is very harmful when itcomes to doing one’s duty, whether public or private. Batteries can power anything from smallsensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make themsmaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries aremuch larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU)researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter andmore efficient.
"To provide enough power, we need certainmethods with high energy density", said Jae Kwon, assistant professor ofelectrical and computer engineering at MU. "The radioisotope (放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is muchhigher than chemical batteries."
Kwon and his research team have beenworking on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thicknessof a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanical systems(M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they aresafe.
"People hear the word 'nuclear' andthink of something very dangerous," he said, "However, nuclear powersources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such aspace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems."
His new idea is not only in the battery'ssize, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon's battery uses a liquid semiconductorrather than a solid semiconductor.
"The key part of using a radioactivebattery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy candamage the lattice structure of the solid semiconductor," Kwon said,"By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize thatproblem."
Together with J. David Robertson, chemistryprofessor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working tobuild and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery'spower, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said thatbattery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

This past fall semester,at Duke University, there were two students who were taking Organic Chemistry. They did pretty well on all of the tests and the midterms and labs, etc., suchthat going into the final they had a solid "A". These two friends were so confident goinginto the final that the weekend before finals' week, even though the Chemistryfinal was on Monday, they decided to go up to the University of Virginia andhave a party with some friends up there. So they did this and had a great time. However, with the aftereffects of alcohol and everything, they overslept allday Sunday and didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday morning.
Rather than taking thefinal then, what they did was to find Professor Aldric after the final andexplain to him why they missed the final. They told him that they went up toUVA for the weekend, and had planned to come back in time to study, but theyhad a flat tire(爆胎)on the way back and didn'thave a spare and couldn't get help for a long time and so were late gettingback to campus.
Aldric thought this overand then agreed that they could make up the final on the following day. The twoguys were overjoyed and relieved. So, they studied that night and went in thenext day at the time that Aldric had told them. He placed them inseparate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet and told them to begin.
They looked at the firstproblem, which was something simple about free radical formation and was worth5 points. “Cool,” they thought, “this is going to be easy.” They did thatproblem and then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what theysaw on the next page.

Passage 2
A large, detached (独立的) house not only ensures privacy. It is also a statussymbol. The “magnificent home” is set in a big garden. Of course, this kind ofhouse is an unrealistic dream for most people. But even a small detached house, surrounded by a garden, gives the required suggestion of rural life which isdear to the hearts of many British people. Most people would be happy to livein a cottage(村舍),and if this is a thatched(茅草的) cottage, suggestive of apre-industrial age, so mush the better.
Most people try to avoidliving in a block of flats (what the Americans call "apartmentblocks"). Flats, they feel, provide the least amount of privacy. With afew exceptions, mostly in certain locations in central London, flats are thecheapest kind of home. The people who live in them are those who cannot affordto live anywhere else.
The dislike of living inflats is very strong. In the 1950s millions of poorer people lived in old, cold, uncomfortable nineteenth century houses, often with only an outsidetoilet and no bathroom. During the next twenty years many of them were givennew "high rise" blocks of flats to live in which, with centralheating and bathrooms, were much more comfortable and were surrounded by grassyopen spaces. But people hated their newhomes. They said they felt cut off from the world with all those floors up.They missed the neighborliness. They couldn't keep a watchful eye on theirchildren playing down there in those lovely green spaces. The new high-riseblocks quickly got broken. The lifts didn't work The corridors weredark.Windows were damaged and were not repaired. There was graffiti all overthe walls.

Passage 3
When we are not engaged inthinking about some definite problem. we usually spend about 95 percent of ourtime thinking about ourselves. Now, if we stop thinking about ourselves for awhile and begin to think of other persons' good points, things will be quitedifferent.
One of the most neglectedvirtues is appreciation. Somehow, we neglect to praise our son or daughter whenhe or she brings home a good report card, and we fail to encourage our childrenwhen they first succeed in baking a cake or building a birdhouse. Nothingplease children more than this kind of parental interest and approval.
The next time you enjoydelicious food at a restaurant, send word to the cook that it is excellentlyprepared, and when a tired salesperson shows you unusual politeness, pleasemention it .
Every minister, lecturerand public speaker knows the discouragement of pouring himself or herself outto an audience and not receiving any appreciative comment. What applies to professionalsapplies doubly to workers in offices, shops and factories and our families andfriends. In our interpersonal relations we should never forget that all our associates are human beingsand hunger for appreciation. It is the legal tender that all souls enjoy.
Try to be friendly andappreciative in your daily life, and you'll be surprised how that will changeyour life and the world.

Passage 4
Industrial robots arealready working in many factories around the world and in our homes, forinstance as smart vacuum cleaners. Scientists say in a few years we will startseeing so-called "social robots," capable of engaging with people.
Today's robots can buildcars and explore underwater objects. But interacting with people is morecomplex than simply taking an incoming message, says Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology researcher Cynthia Breazeal.
"Social robots reallyinteract with people in ways you feel like you're interacting with someonerather than something," she said ."And social robots are reallydesigned to engage you in much more of an interaction that feels like acooperation or partnership."
At the Naval ResearchLaboratory, near Washington, scientists are researching which features robotsshould have to be able to live with humans. Researcher Alan Schultz says socialrobots must be adapted to social situations.
“You know if you're goingto have robots out in the wild, so to speak, they have to follow our standardsand they have to do things in the way we expect, so that we can move about outenvironment and not be interrupted by them or have to think hard about the factthat they're around us," he said.
Social robots do not necessarily have to have a humanface. Steve Cousins, the CEO of Savioke Robotics in Cupertino, California, saystheir robot called Botlr is already being tested in a hotel, delivering smallitems to people.
“It's designed to be inhuman space and interact with people and around people," he said. "Soit interacts with the front desk agent when they're sending it somewhere. Itinteracts with people in the elevator as it's going along. And , it interactswith people at the door when the delivery arrives."
So far, social robots arelimited to very simple tasks like relaying message or taking family photos. ButCynthia Breazeal, who designed this one, says their abilities may be extendedinto many different areas.
