伦敦政经学院于1895年由工人社会主义组织费边社成员韦伯夫妇、格雷厄姆・沃拉斯（Graham Wallas）和萧伯纳建立。建立之初的启动资金由私人慈善家提供，还包括费边社成员Henry Hunt Hutchinson的20,000英镑的遗赠。因为学院的创始人都坚信要由改良主义者而非革命者来发展社会主义事业，所以LSE的建立就是为了辅助费边社达到其实现务实的社会建设的目的。学院的研究课题一直专注于消除贫困和财富分配不均等相关议题，这使得费边社和伦敦政经逐渐成为影响英国工党的重要力量。
