Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension
Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are 4 tasks for you to fulfill. You should read the materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.
Task 1
Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 to 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
For a 400-year-old art form, operas had a bad fame: overweight actresses singing the words which are hard to understand in one of those romance languages you were supposed to learn in high school. And with tickets costing as much as $145 a performance, opera singers also have a certain appearance in people's mind: rich, well-dressed and old.
But now opera companies around the country are loosening their ties and kicking off their shoes in an attempt to keep opera alive and bring the opera to the audience, the young and not-so-rich.
Opera producers have found that to attract this crowd, they need to make the opera closer to common people. That means no formal suits, old-styled theatre or band-breaking ticket prices. And because young people don't or won't come to the opera, companies are bringing the opera to them, giving performances in such unusual places as parks, libraries and public schools.
The Houston Grand Opera's choice is the public library, where it performs — mobile opera, shortened versions (剧本) of child-friendly operas. This summer's production is Hansel & Gretel. By performing smaller versions of large productions, producers are able to make people interested while keeping costs at a reasonable level. The San Francisco Opera, which will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is staging Cinderella free of charge, keeping costs down by employing students from its Young Artists' Training Program.

Task 2
Directions: This task is the same as task 1, the 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45.
Many countries face a somewhat more serious economic problem in the form of an unfavorable trade balance with other nations. Such an imbalance exists when the total value of a country's imports exceeds that of its exports. For example, if a country buys $25 billion of products from other countries, yet sells only $10 billion of its own products overseas, its trade deficit (贸易逆差) is $15 billion. Many underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they lack natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus have to import raw materials or manufactured goods.
One effect of a trade deficit is the flow of currency out of a country. In the case of an underdeveloped nation, this can cause many financial difficulties, including failure to meet debt payments and obstacles to creation of an industrial base. Even in the case of a fully developed nation such as the United States, a large trade deficit is a reason for alarm. American products, made by well-paid workers in U.S. industries, cost more to produce than those made in places like Asia, where labor and material costs are much lower. Money spent on foreign products is money not spent on items produced by domestic industries.
26、What does the passage mainly discuss? ______
A.Some worldwide economic problems.
B.The cause and consequences of trade deficit.
C.Lack of resources in underdeveloped countries.
D.High labor and material costs in developed countries.
27、According to the passage, a trade imbalance occurs when ______.
A.a country is facing serious financial problems
B.a country buys more from other countries than it sells overseas
C.the value of a country's exports is greater than that of its imports
D.products imported are more expensive than those exported
28、Many underdeveloped countries have trade deficits because ______.
A.they failed to meet debt payments
B.they export most of their natural resources to other countries
C.they borrow too much money from other countries
D.they have to import most of their manufactured products
29、Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible cause of a trade imbalance? ______
A.The flow of currency out of the country.
B.Low labor and material costs in Asian countries.
C.Lack of natural resources.
D.An undeveloped industrial base.
30、It can be inferred from this passage that American industries ______.
A.do not pay their workers sufficiently
B.are hurt by a trade imbalance
C.imported labor and material from abroad
D.are able to prevent a trade deficit
Task 3
Directions: The following is a news report. After reading it you should complete the information by filling in the blanks marked 46 through 50 in the table below. You should write your answers in no more than three words on the Answer Sheet correspondingly.
Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, ! step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important delivery letter to my home in time, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post office box for a new business ! was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. "Wasn't it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?" I said yes. "Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office even if we have to make one for you. You don't know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.
31、From the passage, we understand that the author did not understand the importance of giving until he was in ______.
32、According to the author you don't have to be ______ in order to give.
33、The author wrote a note of appreciation to the post office because the postman delivered ______ in time.
34、More than ______, when the author needed a post office box, many people had applied for post office boxes before him.
35、The postmaster said they usually get nothing but ______.
Task 4
Directions: After reading the following passage, you will read 5 statements. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph no more than once. The 5 statements are numbered 51 to 55. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. You should mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
A. Is it possible to live on other planets? The United States government is taking a serious look at the moon and Mars as potential places for future human settlement. The moon could serve as a training ground for later journeys to Mars. Currently, with Mars becoming the eventual long-term goal, serious questions exist as to whether the dangers of the settlement on the moon are too extreme and unnecessary.
B. One major reason the settlement on the moon is too dangerous is the difference between the atmosphere environment of the moon and Mars. Atmosphere is important because it protects humans and all other life from a continuous attack of radiation (辐射) caused by sources such as the sun. This radiation is especially dangerous to humans because it increases the risk of cancer and can negatively change DNA. The fact that the moon has no atmosphere can cause great harm to human beings. Although Mars' atmosphere is significantly thinner than Earth's, at least it has one and would create some sort of protective barrier for humans.
C. Another important characteristic necessary for human settlement is natural resources like water, of which the moon is believed to have none. Mars, however, contains vast quantities of water ice, dry ice, and also snow. There is also sufficient evidence that water once existed at the surface of Mars and might return in the future if the planet warms. With increased technologies, the potential for settlers to remain on Mars by being increasingly self-sufficient makes Mars a much more attractive goal as the space settlement than the moon.
D. Future settlers will not only benefit from potential water on Mars; the planet is also rich in other natural resources such as oxygen, hydrogen, and minerals, which can be well used in productive ways. For example, hydrogen can be used as fuel, and it can be combined with nitrogen (氮气) to form new materials necessary for human settlement.
E. Due to these advantages, Mars would be a more successful planet for exploration and settlement because it contains the basic resources necessary for humans to survive.
F. Since the environment of Mars is more similar to that of Earth and it contains resources necessary to help life exist, it should be the only option for any kind of long-term human settlement. The settlement on Mars would not only be a milestone in space but also an excellent chance for mankind to improve itself from past adventures on Earth and preserve and make the best use of the natural resources Mars has to offer.
36、The atmosphere on Mars would provide protection against dangerous effects.
37、Mars is the only selection for human being to live in for the environment and resources.
38、Natural resources such as water, which the moon doesn't have, is necessary for human settlement.
39、Compared to Mars, there are serious questions as to whether the dangers of the settlement on the moon are too extreme and unnecessary.
40、Future settlers can not only get potential water from Mars but also other natural resources.
