Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension

You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
Global warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths and about $125 billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Kofi Annan, the former United Nations Secretary General. The report, to be released Friday, analyzed data and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economic trends. It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition (营养不良) and heat-related health problems.
But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.
Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.
Roger Pielke Jr., a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum's report was "a methodological embarrassment" because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的) regions. Dr. Pielke said that climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention. But the report, he said, "will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed (有瑕疵的)".
However, Soren Andreasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty.
In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report.
21、What is the finding of the Global Humanitarian Forum? ______
A.Global temperatures affect the rate of economic development.
B.Rates of death from illnesses have risen due to global warming.
C.Malnutrition has caused serious health problems in poor countries.
D.Economic trends have to do with population and natural disasters.
22、What do we learn about the Forum's report from the passage? ______
A.It was challenged by some climate and risk experts.
B.It aroused a lot of interest in the scientific circles.
C.It was warmly received by environmentalists.
D.It caused a big stir in developing countries.
23、What does Dr. Pielke say about the Forum's report? ______
A.Its statistics look embarrassing.
B.It is invalid in terms of methodology.
C.It deserves our closest attention.
D.Its conclusion is purposely exaggerated.
24、What is Soren Andreasen's view of the report? ______
A.Its conclusions are based on carefully collected data.
B.It is vulnerable to criticism if the statistics are closely examined.
C.It will give rise to heated discussions at the Copenhagen conference.
D.Its rough estimates are meant to draw the attention of world leaders.
25、What does Kofi Annan say should be the focus of the Copenhagen conference? ______
A.How rich and poor regions can share responsibility in curbing global warming.
B.How human and economic losses from climate change can be reduced.
C.How emissions of heat-trapping gases can be reduced on a global scale.
D.How rich countries can better help poor regions reduce climate hazards.
Task 2
Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45.
The multi-billion-dollar Western pop music industry is under fire. It is being blamed by the United Nations for the dramatic rise in drug abuse worldwide. "The most worrying development is a culture of drug-friendliness," says the UN's International Narcotics Control Board in a report released last year.
The 74-page study says the pop music, as a global industry, is by far the most influential trend-setter for young people of most cultures. "Some songs encourage people to take drugs. Certain pop stars make statements and set examples as if the use of drugs for non-medicinal (药用的) purposes was a normal and acceptable part of a person's lifestyle," the study says.
Surprisingly, says the Board, the effect of drug-friendly pop music seems to survive despite the occasional shock of death by overdose. "Such incidents tend to be seen as an occasion to mourn the loss of a role model, and not an opportunity to face the deadly effect of drug use," it notes. Since the 1970s, several internationally famous singers and movie stars — including Elvis Presley, Janice Jophlin, John Belushi, Jimi Hendrix, Jonathan Melvin and Andy Gibbs — have died of either drug abuse or drug related illnesses. With the globalization of popular music, messages promoting drug abuse are now reaching beyond their countries of origin. "In most countries, the names of certain pop stars have become familiar to the members of every household," the study says.
The UN study also blames the media for its description of certain drug incidents, which encourages rather than prevents drug abuse. "Over the past years, we have seen how drug abuse is increasingly regarded as being acceptable or even attractive," says Hamid Ghodse, president of the Board. "Powerful pressure groups run political campaigns aimed at legalizing controlled drugs," he says. Ghodse also points out that all these developments have created an environment which is tolerant of or even favorable to drug abuse and spoils international drug prevention efforts currently underway.
The study focuses on demand reduction and prevention within an environment that has become tolerant of drug abuse. The Board calls on governments to do their legal and moral duties, and to act against the pro-drug messages of the youth culture to which young people increasingly are being exposed.
26、Which of the following statements does the author tend to agree with? ______
A.The use of drugs for non-medicinal purposes is an acceptable part of a person's lifestyle.
B.The spreading of pop music may cause drug abuse beyond country boundaries.
C.No efforts have been made to prevent the spreading of drug abuse.
D.Governments have no ability to act against the pro-drug messages of the youth culture.

29、Which of the following is NOT mentioned as tolerant of drug abuse? ______

Playing a musical instrument can be a fun and rewarding hobby. It's a good way to express feelings and develop confidence with your ability. If you want to learn a musical instrument, you might face a problem: what to play? Here are a few questions to help you decide it.
What kind of music do you like?
What you are interested in can encourage you to play. A piece of music might move you more than another. Traditional orchestra musical instruments are what you hear in classical music. Modern music calls for modern instruments, like electric guitars.
Where are you going to practice?
Practicing the drums, for example, can drive your neighbors crazy. Think about where and when you are going to practice, as well as the patience of the people you live with or near. Some instruments like the guitar give you the chance of playing in the night using earphones, while your housemates sleep in peace. Also, you may need to consider going to a school or a music center to practice.
How much money can you spend?
This is quite a big problem. A lot of instruments can be bought in different price ranges, but this doesn't change the fact that many instruments, such as the piano, are always expensive. If you can't afford your chosen instrument, will you be able to borrow someone else's?
Are there any physical limitations?
If you are small and don't like lifting heavy objects, you won't want to carry a cello. If you don't have great lung power, think twice about the saxophone. Don't let your physical shortcomings put you off. But remember that with the right coaching, everyone can develop the right skills.
31、It's a good way to express feelings and develop confidence with your ______.
32、Traditional orchestra musical instruments are the ones in ______.
33、Some instruments can be played in the night ______.
34、Many instruments are ______.
35、If you are small and don't like lifting ______ objects, give up a cello.

Creative Book Report Ideas
A. Are you at a loss for creative book report ideas for your students? If yes, then this article will help you make reading and reviewing books more creative for your class. In an age of PSPs, Xboxes, anime and gaming arcades, reading has lost its foothold in the list of hobbies that children tend to cite. Most of the reading that kids do today, comes in the form of compulsory books that they need to read for school and maybe that is the reason they find reading to be an insurmountable and boring task. If you want to inculcate the love for languages and literary masterpieces in your students and want them to devour books everyone should read, then a good way of going about the same would be to get them to start working on creative book report ideas. While working on creative ideas for book reports, your students will have to understand the book in a way that allows them to come up with new ways to present to the class, the essence of the book.
B. As a teacher, while egging your students to activate their creative gray cells, you will have to help them out with basic ideas that they can work on. Depending on the age bracket that your students belong to, the creative book report ideas will vary. This is so, not just because of the varying attention spans that children of various age groups posses but also because of the amount of work that kids can put into the report. While a middle school student will be comfortable handling a handy cam, a student from elementary school will be more fascinated if he is working with paints and puppets. So do you want to know how to write a book report creatively? In this article, we will list out for you, a couple of good creative book report ideas for elementary students and for middle school students.
C. A book report sandwich is a good creative idea for book reports. As a teacher, you can get drawings of a sandwich on sheets of paper that are of the color of the ingredients of your sandwich, for example, a cream sheet of paper to resemble mayonnaise, red to represent tomato and likewise. Obviously, each ingredient should be cut in a way that when assembled together, it looks like a sandwich. Now, give each of your students one of these book sandwiches to create their book report. It can start with the name of the book and the author's name on the top slice of the sandwich. The second ingredient can have the summary of the book on it. Each subsequent ingredient can have a description of the main characters, the setting of the book, the plot, and then his or her views about the book. Once they are done with their book reports, they can staple the book sandwich together and then, you can create a class bulletin board with all the book report sandwiches on display.
D. Oral retelling is one of the good techniques to retell a story. It is also one of the favorite creative book report ideas among students. The job that the student will have is to read the book and then pick a few objects at his/her home which will allow him/her to retell the story in a way that makes it interesting for his/her audience. Every time he/she picks out an object from the bag to report the book he/she has read, there has to be a valid connection between the book and the object, which the student can first ask the audience to guess and then go ahead and explain it. This idea is spin-off on the normal show and tells and allows for an interactive book report session.
E. This is one of the creative ideas for book reports in which, as the teacher, you will have to divide your class into groups and give them one book each. The students can then read the book and get together and write a play and act it out for the class. To give a deeper insight into the book, one of the students can play the role of the author and as a group, the students can try and recreate the thought process of the author. The student playing the role of the author can then interrupt the play at important junctures and talk about the reasons for these twists in the play and how he/she came up with these plot lines.
36、Teachers can create a class bulletin board to display all the book report sandwiches after their students finish their reports.
37、Retelling a story is one of the favorite creative book report ideas among students and it tells and allows for an interactive book report session.
38、Nowadays, most of book children read are those they need to read for school.
39、The creative book report ideas vary according to ages because children in different age groups have different attention span.
40、That teachers have to divide their class into groups and give them one book each is a good creative book report idea.
